Navy Ceremonial Guard handpicks Sailors

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) -- Sailors interested in being part of the Navy's ceremonial guard can now apply according to a message released Feb. 4.

The Navy ceremonial guard has been part of Navy history and American heritage since 1931 according to NAVADMIN 039/11. It is the official ceremonial unit of the Navy and the most recognized, holding the nickname, "The face of the Navy." A screening is required for appointment.

Sailors with a projected rotation date (PRD) through June 2011 are eligible. Others may apply for this assignment with command and detailer approval. Those selected will detach from their present command at their normal PRD.

The guard is located in the nation's capital. Sailors assigned there provide diplomatic support for the president, secretary of defense, secretary of the Navy, chief of Naval operations and commandant, Naval District Washington. The mission is to represent the Navy in presidential and joint forces ceremonies in the United States and abroad.

The following billets are available now:
Boatswain's Mate - E5
Ship's Serviceman - E5 (with 3122 NEC)
Recruit company commander- E5- E8

Volunteers interested in this assignment must be comfortable interacting with the public, must possess tact and display maturity. Those selected are considered exceptional representatives of the Navy and must possess an impeccable appearance and military bearing.

Applications must be postmarked no later than March 6. The selection results will be available no later than April 5.

Once an application is received and reviewed, a telephone interview will be arranged between the Sailor and the ceremonial guard command master chief.
